FACULTY HANDBOOK · ACADEMIC POLICY
Grading & Assessment Standards
Faculty obligations for grading, drawn directly from the official Faculty Handbook.
1Evaluation and GradingSourced
Faculty are responsible for providing an individual evaluation of the work of each student assigned to them. Final course grades must be submitted within 10 calendar days of the close of the semester as published in the schedule of courses; the Director should be informed of any extenuating circumstances.
- All students must be given the same amount of time to improve a grade — if one student is afforded additional time or opportunity, all students must be afforded the same, subject to ADA policy and guidelines.
- Students must be informed of the basis for grading and the requirements for submitted tests, reports, or other work, and warned to give proper acknowledgment for direct or indirect quotations.
- Instructors may not change a grade after official submission unless the change is due to a clerical or calculating error. In unusual circumstances, the instructor must submit a written and signed statement from the Director setting forth the reasons for the change; the Director (or designee) has sole discretion to accept or set aside the change.
- Instructors must be able to explain to any student why a grade was consistent with the instructor's grading policy and with grades issued to other students — without divulging the identity or grades of other students.
Grades are based on the quality of work as shown by written tests, term papers, and projects as indicated on the course syllabus, and are posted to the student's permanent academic record.
2Official Grading ScaleSourced
Authoritative sourceThe Handbook directs faculty to “refer to the catalog for the latest grading scale.” On this portal, the letter-grade scale, quality points, and GPA calculation are defined in the
Grading Scale & GPA Policy (AA-2026-05) — always apply the scale from that policy.
