Grading Policy & GPA Scale v2.0 · Draft

The University's standard 4.00 letter-grade scale with plus/minus values, the non-GPA symbols, and the method by which grade-point average is computed.

4.00 scale · A+ capped All programs MSCHE evidence

The University of Mid-Florida records academic achievement on the standard U.S. 4.00 grade-point scale with plus/minus distinctions, the scale used by most regionally and nationally accredited institutions. This policy defines each grade, its grade-point value, the non-GPA symbols, and the method by which grade-point average (GPA) is computed.

Institutional GPA maximum: 4.00

UMF caps A+ at 4.00 — A+ and A carry identical grade points. This keeps the maximum attainable institutional GPA at a clean 4.00, which simplifies honors thresholds, Title IV Satisfactory Academic Progress calculations, and transcript evaluation by receiving institutions.

Rule-based construction (accreditation-defensible)

The table is generated by a rule: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1; a plus adds 0.33 and a minus subtracts 0.33, with A+ capped at the A value of 4.00. Stating the rule in the catalog and self-study is easier to defend than a standalone table, and yields exactly these values.

2Non-GPA symbols

The following symbols carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA. Their effect on earned credit and on attempted credit (which matters for SAP pace) is shown.

3How GPA is calculated

GPA = Σ(gradePoints × creditHours) ÷ Σ(creditHours of GPA-bearing courses)
Carnegie alignment

Grade points are assigned per credit hour, and credit hours follow UMF's Carnegie-aligned standard (45 hours of student work per credit). GPA therefore weights each course by its credit-hour value, consistent with the University's credit-hour policy.

3a. Term GPA vs. Cumulative GPA — for CampusOS implementation

Cumulative GPA is not an average of term GPAs. Averaging term GPA figures gives every term equal weight regardless of how many credits it carried, which produces the wrong number the moment credit loads differ term to term. CampusOS must instead carry forward running totals of quality points and GPA-bearing credits across every term, and divide only once, at the point of display.

cumulativeGPA = Σ(term quality points) ÷ Σ(term GPA credits)  —  summed across all terms, divided once

Term GPA is the same formula, just scoped to one term's courses — compute it for display, but never feed it back into the cumulative figure as an input.

TermCoursesTerm Quality PtsTerm GPA CreditsTerm GPA
Fall 2024A (3cr), B+ (3cr)22.063.67
Spring 2025C (3cr), F (3cr)6.061.00
Summer 2025A (3cr)12.034.00
Common implementation mistake

Wrong — averaging the three term GPAs: (3.67 + 1.00 + 4.00) ÷ 3 = 2.89

Correct — cumulative running totals: (22.0 + 6.0 + 12.0) ÷ (6 + 6 + 3) = 40.0 ÷ 15 = 2.67

The two methods diverge because Summer 2025 only carried 3 credits but the averaging method weights it the same as the 6-credit terms. The running-totals method is the one that must ship.

What CampusOS must store or compute

A running cumulativeQualityPoints and cumulativeGpaCredits per student — updated every time a grade posts — not a stored "GPA" field that gets re-averaged term over term. Term GPA is a read-only snapshot of the same formula scoped to that term; it is never an input to the cumulative calculation.

4Graduate program note

Grade points above define the institutional GPA. Program-level minimum passing grades (e.g., a graduate course may require a B− or better to satisfy a degree requirement) and the graduation GPA minimum (3.00) are defined in the Degree Audit Policy and program catalogs, not in this grading scale.

5Transition from the prior scale

Action required

This 4.00 plus/minus scale differs from the grading scheme currently configured in CampusOS (in which A = 3.75, no minus grades, and different percentage bands). Adopting this policy requires: (a) updating the CampusOS grading scheme; (b) setting an effective catalog year; and (c) a Registrar decision on whether prior-term GPAs are recomputed under the new scale or grandfathered under the scale in force when earned. Historical grades were entered without minus grades and would map A→A, B→B, etc.
